My official blurb is: Michael Perkins is a Christchurch-born, Wellington-based photographer of objects. He works in a by-turns warmly and cooly haunted visual space that is bounded somehow by geometry, folk music, still life painting and psychology.
That does sound good. And it might even still be true.
I have been using photography as a means of expression (phrase stolen from
Photoforum!) for many years, but with particular vigour since 2006. I started exhibiting in 2011 in group shows, and had my first solo
show in 2013, debuting a body of work I call folk photography. Since then I have moved away from objects/still-life and into digital montage with an interest in compressing times and spaces.
